Elizabeth A. Evan’s Artist Statement
“As an Artist I seek to create an emotional response that captures the viewer’s attention and transports them into the painting. My work is representational and therefore the choice of subject is always a key consideration.
The artistic challenge for me is in combining form, colour, composition and subject in a way that makes it all work seamlessly. I strive to blend a number of elusive elements in just the right proportions and combine these to create an image on canvas.
I use my technical skill as a tool to serve my artistic vision. My chosen medium is acrylic paint on canvas and my message reflects both the positive and challenging aspects of the human condition. I use art work as a means of telling a compelling story.
I paint with bright, bold colours that are applied in “bricks” – each brick integrates with other bricks to form an overall seamless recognizable image. It’s a technique I describe as “brickilism”.
In many of my works I include a sub-image – a shadow that is subtle and yet relevant to the overall work. Shadows enhance the story of the main image, creating a sub-plot which may not be discovered by the viewer until they’ve become absorbed in the main story.
As an artist, I strive to ensure the viewer becomes as engaged with the work as I was during the creative process.”
